CITY IMPROVEMENTS.
MR. LOCK'S FURNITURE EMPORIUM. In order to give better facilities to enable him to cope with his increasing business, and to provide for the more effective display of his stock of furniture and furnishings, Mr. W. Lock has made extensive alterations' and improvements to his furnishing warehouse. The whole of the downstairs floor lias been converted into one extensive showroom, the dimensions being 40 x 161 feet, extending from Bridge-street" right- to Wa.kat-u Lane. The auction room, 40x70, and the 8 foot passage leading to it have been replaced by a large plate glass window. In addition to the extra space given by the auction room and passage a room 30 feet long, for the display of carpets a.nd household linen, has been provided, as ivell as a packing and unpacking store of the sime dimensions. A vestibule 10 feet long with glass' fides and folding doors has been built at the main entrance with arches in front of each window, constructed so as to be in harmony with the latest designs in art furniture. There are also three other arches of similar design spanning the whole width of the building. offices have been erected, ami other Improvements made, ivliich all tend to make the Furniture Emporium art up-to-date one. The building has been well lighted with an installation of the most mod'Cirn inverted burners, hung from ball socket pendants. The build in ir was thrown open for inspection on .Saturday evening, the occasion being availed of bv hundreds of people. The Oar risen Band' was in attendance. a.nd gave a number of selections inside the building. which were much appreciated. The alterations wore carried out by Messrs Chamberlain and Stannard.
