N.Z.H.A. CHALLENGE SHIELD

WELLINGTON V. CANTER-BURY

At Wellington on. Saturday a challenge match for the N.Z.H.A. Shield was played between Wellington (holders) and Canterbury, the holders retaining the trophy by 3 goals to 2. In the first spell Canterbury scored a goal to nil; which was increased to 2 before Wellington found the net. When time was called the game was drawn, but as the rules provide for playing on till a team has a lead, the game was continued untii Wellington scored the winning goal. The following comments on the game are taken from the sports edition of the "Post" of Saturday.:— T<i sum up briefly, it may be said that Canterbury were easily superior in the first half, while the advantage in .the latter spell, if any, was with Wellington. In the further play, the home team were rarely in danger. Salek was responsible indirectly for Wellington's success. His centreing was periectj this enabling the forwards to find the -netSome ot his play on the fieild, however, was not up to uis performance against Manawatu.

Unf irtunately, a rgrebtable feature crept into the game. One hesitates to say it, but the visitors —or rather some of them—did not adhere strictly to the trules of hockey. The referee, Msr. C. S. Falconer, came in for a great deal of criticism.

Air. Percy Fletcher, M.A. (St. Peter's College. Cambridge, who is with the Sheffield Choir, and who is a member of tlie Southern Counties' Hockey Council) was greatly disappointed with -the game. It did not, he said, give him a giood impression considering ...e breaches of the rules. After seeing the game he- thought no English team wyas likely to come out. He also objected to the one'-handed play.
