Bd m 1842 -' and then -proceeded to Ne.scn, where his father was stationed by Bishop Selwyn as the. first Ar.glican clergyman. On his father's death Mr. Keay returned Home, and after complete .his schooling ioined the Navy and served in the South" Seas on a survey vessel. He aterwards. settled in this co.ony, where he undertook surveys for the Government at Waiuku. Waitara, and all over the Wa-ikato. H ejoined the survey staff and was kept constanly employed at, among other places, the' Chatham Islands, Tauranga, Opotiki, Hotorua. Maketu, Whakatane, and at Wairoa, Hawkes Bay. Resigning his appointment on the survey staff Mr. Reay sett'ed at Tauranga. but after the Ta.raueia eruption he came drwn to Wairoa, wheve he completed many surveys, the most i.i ipovtanl of which was (.says the "(.i adian") the topographical "survey of the southern portion of "Tuhce Land."
