NELSON EDUCATION BOARD.

[MONTHLY MEETING.

YESTERDAY'S PROCEEDINGS,

The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board commenced yesterday morning. Present: Messrs A. T. Maginnity (chairman), G.B. Shepherd, W. N. Fianklyn, L. D. Easton, W, Lock, J. D. Beuke, J. "W. Fair, and F. W. Smith. The returning officer notified that Mr O. B. Shepherd had been re-elected :i member of the Board.

The Audit Inspector wrote asking what steps the Board proposed to take in connection with moneys which had been paid to Mr Shepherd on account of contracts in which he had been interested at the same time that ho occupied a seat on the Board. It was resolved that the matter be referred to the Board's legal advisers for an opinion, and that all papers and correspondence in connection with the matter be also submitted to the solicitors.

Arising out of a report by Mr Lock a sum was voted to the Committee for on the requirements at Granity school, immediate repairs, necessary. The Board's balance-sheet for 1910 was received from the Audit Office with two "tags." The Department advised that the Amount available to the Board as a building grant, for 1911 was £3200. Arising out of a special report on the condition of the Waingaro school building it was resolved to apply for a gTant for a new school for the locality and to sell the old building.

A sum of £7 10s was authorised for alterations required at Haven road school.

The Ngatimoti Committee was voted a sum of £5 to have some trees removed, and it was also decided to give notice to the owner of the adjoining section of the school ground of intention to fence. It wag further resolved to acknowledge • Teceipt of letters from Mr J. Remnant re the above matters.

In addition to >a number of authorisations for various works for schools on the West Coast, the Board dealt with applications foT grants a s folpainting buildings, £l3 lis 3d, granted; Nelson, Tasman and Hampdennstreet schools fences, deferred for special report; Nelson Brook-street, dust bin, Committee to" be informed that the expenditure on this "work should be met out of allowance; Waimea "West, repairs to pump, 255, granted; Riwaka, fencing, £5 granted; Spring Grove, bathroom; additional £3 15s granted; Waiiti, movable partition, declined; Clifton Terrace, repair s to residence, to be placed on schedule of works to be submitted to the Department; Long Plain, repairs to residence, £4 5s granted: Stoke, new residence, architect to be instructed to inspect present building; Brightwater, additions io house, Committee to be informed that the rent received by them could be devoted to work.

Authority was given to provide copies of number charts for issue to the larger schools' and to invite fenders for 100 desks for Westport school.

Teachership applications were dealt with a s follows:—Clifto K Terrace, sole teacher (IK) applicants), Committee to be consulted as to appointment •jf Mr T. N. Hewlett, or Misses N* €. Basmussen, iC. E. Jones, or A. iL. Eaikes; Miss A. E. Hargreaves was selected for the position of assistant teacher of Millerton school; Stoke, second assistant teacher (eight applicants). Committee to be consulted a s to appointment of Misse s K. V. Shirtliff, A. M. Ingram, A. Neumann or A. L. Baikes; Mis s E. F. Nuttall was appointed teacher at the household school to be opened at Awaroa Bay.

The Board then adjourned till 10 o'clock this morning.

TO-DAY'S PROCEEDINGS

The Board resumed this morning, there being- present Messr s A. T -Maginnitj (Chairman), Franklin) bmith, Beuke, Fair, Eastern. Sibephcrd. The.lnspectors' reports for the month were received. Dovedale, Churchill, Clifton Terrace, and Nelson Girls' Central school had been inspected during- the month. Amended junior scholarship regulations -were presented by the Inspect tors, and it was resolved to forward them to the Department for approval. The Inspectors reported o n the Otago Board's suggestion that correspondence clauses for uraeertiSeated teachers should' be established, by the Department. The report was favourable to the. suggestion, if a workable scheme could be initiated.—lt was resolved that the Otago proposal had •the approval and the "hearty support of the" Nelson. Board.

The Inspectors wer authorised to co-operate with the Education Department with regard to the inspection of th e Roman Catholic High School at Westport. The Sou*h Canterbury Board forwarded a suggestion' that See. 100 of the Education Act be extended to <*.ovor voluntary contribution for Drimary as. well as high schools. It •eras shown that at present local efforts to raise funds on behalf of th<» -Drimary schools were not recognised. —The Board warmly favoured the suggested amendment of the Act.

An application was received from Mr. W. J. Stuart for a household sehool at Croixelles.—lt wa s resolved to request Mr. Stuart to forward the credentials of the proposed teacher. The Board was favourable to the establishment of a school as asked for. It was resolved that Mr. W. D. Thompson, Korere, be asked for further particulars re his application for f. household school.

Appointments were made a-} follows: —Miss E. Find-lay, assistant, Sarau; Miss 10. Molloy. assistant, Motupipf; Miss E. Noble,"sole teacher, Korere; Mr. B. Lavery, sole teacher, Addison'.s; Miss Hood," assistant, Nelson Girls' .School (transfer). It, was resolved to advertise for a male assistant to take Mis s Hood's place, at the Boys' Central School. The resignation of Miss P E. Bolton (Clifton Terrace) and Miss' T. Pasmussen (Denniston) were accepted. The Board rose at noon
