HEAVY RAIN.
The heaviest rain this winter fell yesterday and the preceding day. and continued well into the night, with a northerly .gale. To.day, however, is cold and fine, though the streets are muddv anel the public recreation grounds are Yety sloppy. The barometer, which had fallen rapidly yesterday, rose as rapidlv during the night, but the Government Meteorologist predicts further bad weather. Aj) official telegram received by the Post Office says (hat the Dominion Meteorologist 's weather forecast is for westerly and southerly winds, strong to gale, with showery and changeable conditions generally. The s'oa will be heavy on nS\ the western coasts, and off the east coast of the South Island. A well-known coasting shipper say s that the barometer yes~t onlay was (he lowest for 19 vearsbeing 2S.SO.
