NATIONAL DAIRY ASSOCIATION.
WINTER SHOW AND CONFFR. ENCE. (United Pkess Associatiom.) PAL.MERSTON N., Wednes. There was a large attendance at the Winter Show to-day. the weather being pleasantly fine in the afternoon after heavy rain in the early morning-. The poultry nudging was held in the morning, the entries numbering 300. The judge, Mr F. Brown, poultry instructor. -spoke lrig/lily of the quality of the entries. Air J. Rutherford, of Bell Block, won the dairy produce judging competition, Irvine, Greytown, being second.
The Minister of Agriculture, addressing the National Dairy Conference to-day. said the Government *s representative in ILondVm would not clash in any way with the Association's- representative. who would attend to the commercial side, whilst the Government's representative would pay special attention to the scientific side and particularly to the condition of produce on it s ar. rival. He hoped in that way to prevent a system of home arbitration getting a footing, a s it. had done in the meat trade where he had seen disgraceful proceedings, perfectly sound meat of standard ouality being condemned by the arbitrators, and heavy charges made s-.gaiust it which entirely knocked out the margin of profit. Mr -T. G. ITarlvness read a paper entitled "The Old Uand as viewed from the Ne-w in regard to the Dairy Produce Trade"' being the result, of his investigation at Home on behalf of the Association. After giving comprehensive' information. Mr Harkness made the following suggestions:— That the Government be asked to establish experiment stations, oresided over by a competent and capable chemist; that the Government should be asked to approach the United States with a view to obtaining some concessions in respect to the heavy embargo at present existing against dairy- produce, as there were Cue elements of a I ucra t i vo~« nd increasing trade: advertising at Home, the cost of which should be shared by the exporters as well as their Uondon agents; the adoption of a universal brand "New - Zealand Produce." with a registered number for identification purposes. to replace the nresent undesirable inulti. plicity of brands from a selling standpoint; the grading and maintenance of a high standard of ex-
ports. Papers were also read l>y Mr -T. Bart Yealo on the working <>■ a dairy farm, ana Mr V. AY. Kirk, Government Biologist, on diseases and pests in farmers" orchards «"<! gardens.
