'll ESTATE OF KATE OAKEY.

The first meeting of creditors of-Kate Oakey of Nelson, boardiinghousekeeper, was held yesterday afternoon-. The creditors attending were Messrs G. H. Campbell; E. Trask, and F. Hurley (represent i:rog Nicol and Co.). Mr. W. Vernon Rout appeared for the bankrupt. The D.O.A. (Mr. W. Rout) read the following furnished statement by the bankrupt: "I hav© been ipiarried for about' l<s years, and I have two children, the elder of whom is 11 years old. At the time of my marriage I owned a cottage in the Wood, where-' we used to livie. On account of the locality not agreeing with my husband's health, ■ I bought Mr. Geo. Dee's house in Collingwood for £285. At the same time I executed a . mortgage over this house and the cottage in the Wood to pay for Dee's house. The cottage usually let at about 9s a week. Owing to the poor health of my Child and niv husband, 1" then went to the Port to live, and my child becoming seriously ill, the doctor ordered us to live at Stoke. Up till this time my husband was not making enough money to piano-tuning and lig J ht work, <but he has never been strong enough to earn the money necessary to keep us going, and from the time of my marriage we have had to rely on help by friends and. relations*. About 190 a we cam,© into town to live for the benefit of my health and for the sake of the children. About a year ago, as. my husband was not makin, genough money to support myself and the children, I was placed under the necessity of earning the living and decided to open a board-ing-house as the only means of keeping the home together, renting Mrs. Askew's house for the purpose at 17s 6d a w-eefc" Since last April I have struggled on, hoping to put things on a better footing j >at times I have 'had only one- or two boarders at an average of 18s a week (for a fortnight there were none, expense* still going on), the receipts barely exceeding the cash dis--bursements for rent and living, lea.vdng nothing for wages for myself. The iirumediato cause of ray bankruptcy is pressure brought to bear by a creditor who has threatened to put in the bailiff." Mrs. Oakey further stated that her husband was- unable to work on account of ill-health. The D.O.A. stated that the house in Collinigwood-Eitreet would bring very little, if anything, over the mortgage.
