BUSH FIRES IN THE MANAWATU.

The fire in Mfi-nawali; Gorge, which burned throughout Saturday and Sunda;.-, and was. stiil smouldering y.-te'r d.iy, has -entirely destroyed about a m:!e ct beautiful Gorge scenery. The riro was caused by some railway surf.icemcn setting alight rome grass. FUDGE CAKE. Cream together one eupTul of sugar and two-thirds of a cupful of butter : add >jn c cupful of milk. Stir in l : ghtly two and one-half cupfuls of flour, into which one heaping spoonful of baking powder has been sifted. Then stir in one-fourth cupful of melted chocolate. Add o?ie-haif c:ip of walnuts, broken up coarsely, and lastly, three eggs beaten separately. For the futile frosting use one and one-half teaspoonfula of butter and one-half cupfuls of unsweetened cocoa, one and onefourth cupfuls of sugar, a few grains of salt, and one-fourth cupful of roiik. Heat to boiling point and boil icn minutes. Remove from fire, and beat until creamy. Add one-half teaspoonsful of vanilla, and then pour over cake to a depth of one-quarter inch.
