Commenting on the reprieving of. a Rhodesia native who was reprieved by Lord Gladstone after being sentenced to death for assaulting a white woman,,the Johannesburg "Star" says the native confessed to having' committed the deed and 4he judge said_ he was unable to hold out any hope ef a reprieve. The information available to the public, the "Star" says, does not disclose any palliating circumstances. The Rihodesian law provides the death penalty in' the case of a. native convicted of the "attempt alone. * t .-.;.. The ''Star" adds that Lord Gladstone failed to appreciate the conditions of'the country.
