HEART FAILURE WHILE BATHING. ~ NAPIER, Monday. A -fatality occurred on the MarintParade beacli at' 6.15 this evening., whsr a married man. a tailor's cutter, named .3. M. Clapham, went in to bathe. Hewas in the - ater not more than thre* minutes when it was seen that he wa? incapacitated. An incoming wavr brought the unconscious man ashore be fore the would-be rescuers had time ti reach the surf. Restorative measure? were; .applied immefdaatqiiy, and wert continued for four hours, with the aic of ambulance workers and two doctors, without consciousness returning. It it supposed that death was partly due tc. heart failure. SUICIDE' AT CHRISTCHURCH. AN AGRICULTURAL DEPARTMENT OFFICIAL, . ■ CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. The polibe were informed this afternoon that Mr Arthur Calcott, who ha>been for some years an- officer of the Agricultural Department, and who hat recently been acting as chief clerk of the" Christchurch office of the Department, had died suddenly at. his residence . ii Durham-street, St. Albans, under circumstances suggesting suicide. : Di\ Goulburn Gibson was called iii by Mj Calcott's family ,But could do, nothing.. Mr Calcott expiring shortly after the doctor's arrival. An inquest was helc /this evening, when, a verdict was 'returned of suicide while of unsound mind.
