The judgment of the Board of Trade inquiry at Cardiff into the loss of the steamer British Standard on her maiden voyage to Brazil, declared that the influx of water was due to human agency, 'and censured, the master and chief engineer for gross negligence. It added that there was some evidence of collusion between the managing owner and the master. The latter's certificate was suspended for 18 months, and he was mulcted in 10C0 guineas towards, the cost of the inquiry. The chief engineer was suspended for 12 months, and mulcted in 60 guineas.
