ANNU AL MEETIN(:. Tiic annual meeting oi' the Nelson District In -Lit'iiti.% N.Z.E.1.. was held a; the J>oy.s' Central School on Saturday. 20th August, where (.liere was a good representative attendance of teachers, especially front the Motueka and W'a'mca districts. The "resident. -Mi'. F. (!. G-ibbs, took the chair. A letter was read from the Auckland Country Teachers' Association asking the Nelson teachers to i n-oporato with thim in endeavouring to s.ecure that a.LI tcachers" residences .should be -provided with bathrooms and wash-houses. It wts ve solved that- tJie Nelson delegates should be. instructed l-o support a.ny remit m the direction indicated at the annual conference. A letter was read from the secretary of the Education Board indicating that some new method of paying teacher.-; would probably be adopted so as to obviate file neecsi-ilv I'oy teachers paying exchange on cheques. A sub-committee was appointed to make inquiries as (> the practice obtaining in oilier districts and to take anv action, that, might be Jie 7 oessary. The annual report and balance sheet were read and adopted. The report .--iK>wed that the memher.-hip had again slightly increased and now stood ni ]C4. Two appeals for legal assistance had been made to the Institute during the vcar. but it had been reluctantly .refused in one case on account of the teacher not haying been a- member. In both Jaw suits th.e teachers had been sneers-fin. Reference was ma.de to the- urgent necessity for a. promotion scheme, and the hope was expressed t-lia.t the Education Board would sec its wav to bring one into force at the beginning of 1911.
