The domes and minarets are reduced to broken masonry. Troops are preventing further looting. 'Che fire spread with terrifying rapidity, and there were frequent deafening reports from the explosions of ehemienis. The flames invaded the. menagerie. and eight gendarmes with rifles were ordered to shoot, but the order was countermanded for fear they might -diout the crowd. The elephant, white asses and monkeys were freed and escaped, but lions, tigers, and other animals were burnt. The firemen were procrpt. but many houses had no water ;service. The people of Brussels were in a state of pitiable anxietv throughout the night, as there were rumours that hundreds were dead. Lloyds do not believe that their losses will exceed half a million. Their total insurance is a million.
