MINIMUM RATES FOR AUSTRALIA. Pbess Association.- -Copyright. WASHINGTON, Thins. President Taft has issued a proclamation extending the minimum tariff to Australia and New Zealand. THE CANADIAN AGREEMENT. FURTHER AMERICAN OVERTURES NEW YORK, Thurs. President Taft has invited the Canadian officials to attend a conference to consider closer trade relations and a general readjustment of duties. OTTAWA, Thursday. Mr. Feilding, Minister of Finance, speaking in the Dominion House of Commons, referring to the agreement, said one result had been a tacit recognition of the right of British colonies to give mutual preference. Retaliation was sometimes necessary in self-de-fence, but a tariff war was deplorable. Canada, was now able to give, preference to Jamaica and other colonies. He emphasised the honourable compromise reached, and acknowledged Mr. Bryce's unfailing co-operation and support. He had firmly refused to give the United States the whole of the French treaty list, but he offered to reciprocate for special reductions below the minimum American tariff.
