A good fall of rain would be very welcome to gardenere, and the need is being felt, by all. It is learnt that Mr. R. H. J. -Beeves has been ie~app6fnted a member of the Legislative Council. Mr. Rebves' present term expires on the 15th inst. Mr. F. Tnwk'e term; of office does not expire till March next. ' . ' A The Congregational Ladies' Guild will hold an entertainment and Christmas Tree in the schoolroom attached to the church on Tuesday, 21st inst. The m'emf. mere of the chutch ain<r their friends will thus be able to assist Santa Glaus in filling tie stockings of the children on Christmas Eve. The price of admission is 6d, children half-price. The attention of the City Council is called to tho dangerous state in which the road at the end of Mary Ann-stroet, Washington Valley, has been left by the drainage works. Several narrow escapes from capsized 'vehicles have already occurred, and drivers complain very n-pich of the inconvenience and hindrance from which th«y suffer. A very little expenditure in altering the grade, would make • this road much easier of adeems, and as it .is : the highway to one of ••the §nes* residential localities in the city, tho cosjt would be justified. ' '- i The Nelson Citizens' Band, following their usual summer evening custom, will give a sacred concert in the Botanical Reserve^ comm|jncing at 8 o'clock, eon 'Sunday next. Programmes for the concert will be distributed at the gate. •Mr William Coleman, of"'; Richmond, is well known as a successful breeder of game fowls of the Old English 'type, and haa won numerous •prizes at various poultry shows. The painting referred to has just been received, and l>y request Mr Coleman has plaxsed it on exhibition in tho window of Messrs J. E. Hounsell ' and Co., Tra-falgar-street. The artist has chosen ■ for her -subject a view of the. track lea3ing to the Millerton coal mine, near Westport, and the study is typical of New Zealand mountain 1 bush scenery, which is faithfully and naturally, depicted. The slum quarter of Chicago, known as. the 'lied Light" District, was recently the scene of one of tha most remarkable outbursts ever known in the western city, which is familiar enough with sensations. .. "Gipsy* .Smith, the well- ' known' English" evangelistj began a tour of the district. It was a torchlight procession, with 3000 followers, accompanied by several bands. Crowds of loafers and hooligans of the worst type were, attracted to the roadside. Men and women left the ranks to .- plead with the onlookers. "Gipsy" ' Smith marched .on in front preaching loudly, ho effect 'was astonishing. Man after man, joined the procession. - In half-an-hour the 3000 had increased to 10,000. Women and girls fell in, many of them sobbing and weeping.
