CRICKET.
WIND-UP OF THE ATHLETIC CLUB. A large number of former members of the Athletic Cricket Club dined together at the Comemrcial Hotel on Saturday I evening. Formed in 1885, the club had a very successful career. On seven occa-sions-^and for five years Jn succession — the club appropriated senior championship honours. The removal of prominent members, the retirement of others from the field, and, finally, the formation of the Old Boys' Club, havo effected the old Athletic Club to such an extent that it was impossible for it to continue in existence. On Saturday night, therefore, th 6 final step was taken and the club disbanded. The chair was taken by Mr W. W. Squires, the President, and Messrs W. Moyes and H. Saunders (Vice-President) were amongst those present. After dinner, amongst the toasts were i-'iose of the President and the VicePresidents, Mr A. Clayden voicing the members' appreciation of the services rendered by the officers. In responding, Messrs Squires, Moyes and Saunders regretted the winding-up of the club. A toast to the "Old Club" was drunk in silence. Mr Hesseltine, the secretary, reported that most of the active members had thrown in their lot with the Nelson Club. He also stated that the club's liabilities had been met. The Nelson. Cricket' Club was toasted, and the gathering terminated with '.he singing of "Auld Lang Syne." Old members of the Athletic Club are scattered throughout the 'Dominion, and these, as well as those an Nelson, will regret exceedingly that the "g°°d °W ".lub" has seen its last day. The fortunes of tho club from Beason to season have been followed with keen interest Sv those who in former years donned the flannels and took a place in the field. Promotion, transfers, other ties, and the "age limit" — these liave been responsible for the disappearance of many old faces —of the pioneers of the club. To a large number the fall of the curtain on the old Athletic Club will cause a sharp lang of regret.
