SPRAYING FOR CODLIN MOTH.
A', tha experiment orchard, Bat'urst, New South Wales, during-. tl.e past two years experiments have byconducted to determine tim mo-: effective spray for the destruction cf .'adi in moth. These exuerimants confirmed- the experisiiC2 oi* t-,i i. s.isons as to th absolute v.r:?■:■-■'--il spraying at least four times,' i.e, as the rpotals begin to fall,' :i»'l ' fa intervals of a week or ten da;.s af'.i :■ the petals have fallen. A writer in the departmental "Gazette" remarks that it can readily .be understood thai in these four applications tho har** done to the embryo fruit, foliage and tender wood of the tree by any imperfectly prepared spraying material that acts corrosively will more than outbalance any devastating effects upon the pest, and therefore special attention has been paid to ascertaining which preparations available cau be recommended, not only as an ef fective check on tho .pest, but also which can be used without risk of in---jury to the tree. In these two respects the experiments at Bathurst experiment orchard have shown Swift's arsenate of lead to be superior to arsenite of soda and Paris green. The prepared arsenate of lead has proved very effective in Vic toria also, .where the use of the spraj has iucreased very much during tin last two seasons.
