A PERFORMANCE THAT FAILED.
ROWDY AND CLAMOROUS "GODS." SCENE AT A CHRISTCHUECH THEATRE. (United Puess Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Bengougb, the" Canadian cartoonist and humourist, -was to have given his first entertainment here last night. There was a well-filled theatre;, but it was evident ■from the 'begin 1 ning that Bengough was far from well. . At nine o'clock it was, announced that he was unable to go on, and the audience could obtain tickets for the following evening's entertainment. The stalls and circle took the tickets ana left; but the "gods" demanded their money back, and thronged the ticket box, and burst into the lower part of the theatre. The police were passive, and for over an hour the crowd -wero noisy, and bordering on a riot, when a posse of police from the station cleared -the premises.
