ELECTION OF THE FEDERAL SPEAKER.
A SCENE OF WILD DISORDER. HUMILIATING ' PROCEDURE. (Received 9-40 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Thursday. The election of Speaker to the Federal House in the room of the late Sir F. W. Holder, was characterised by a wild scene of disorder. The Labourites objected to the Government selecting the ' candidate in caucus, and made a violent attack. They moved an adjournment, when :the voting was equal. Tho. Clerk of the" Houso raised a storm by saying that he gave hs vote for the continuance of tho debate, 'Labourites, demanding to know who gave him. the right to vote. Mr Deakin came to the Clerk's assistance, pointing but that the standing orders provided that in circumstances of an equal division a- debate must pro>> ceed. - The Labonr Party nominated • Mr -McDonald, Chairman- of Committees, but finally Dr. Salmond was elected by 37 to 29.
