I (Lord Crewe, Secretary of State 3 for the Colonies, presided at the open 5 ing of the first Press Conference on I cable news, and press inter-eommuni- . cation. He remarked that very choap ; communication lay behind all prescriptions for bringing the various parts of the Empire closer. Mr Buxton, Postmaster-General, remarked that the subject was largely a matter of finance. He promised that the Post Office would assist in securing the objects of the Conference. Other speeches were made l>y Messrs Kyffin-Thomas, Fink, and Temperley, It was resolved that the cheapening and improvement of cable rates were a paramount necessity, and a comtnil- , tee was appointed to consider the means of achieving this end. Mr Deakin 's and Sir Joseph Ward 's messages of congratulation -to the "Standard are published. Mr Kyffin-Thomas has been appointed President of all press delegations, in addition to the chairmanship of the Australian section.
