" THE GLEN."
RETENTION OF THE NATIVE BUSH. DISCUSSION BY THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. A PROPOSAL TO THE LESSEE. The Land Traffic Committee of the Chamber of Commerce reported to the Chamber last night in reference to the bush at the Glen, Wakapuaka, against the coming destruction of whith the "Mail" made a protest the other day. The Committee had visited the Glen, and had been shown the boundaries of 50 acres of bush that the lessee (Mr Jas. Morrison) was willing to lease to a society or institution at an annual rental of £62 10s, the society to do the necessary fencing. The Committee explained that this block of bush was on the eastern side of the Glen 6tream, but that the Committee considered the terms too hieh. The Committee recommended that Mr Morrison be approached with" ' the view to his consideration of an of- : fer to lease an area of four chains on , either 6ide of the stream, extending from the top section peg of the Glendnan township for 60 chains, which approximately would be 48 acres, the I rental to be a considerable reduction on the amount asked by Mr Morrison in the first instance. \ Considerable discussion ensued, the ' feeling being unanimously in favour of ' the Glen being reclaimed for the use of picnickers, if satisfactory arrange- ! ments could be made. Mr Fell had no doubt that the lessee would meet the Chamber reasonably. Some of the speakers pointed out that /t was the flat of the Glen that was most used by picnickers, and that only a few people went up into the bush. On Mr Bisley's motion the matter was referred back to the Committee for further negotiations with Mr Morrison.
