Ed the residence of Mr Robert Patt'e who was then manager of Mr Stevens'' ! farm, still called ' ' Derry Doon. ' ' Later they occupied two rooms in the residence of Mr John Fowler sen (now of Ashburton). opposite' Mj Goodwin's hotel. Here they remained ! for six months, whilst Mr Pattie built a whare on the land he had acquired — now known as "Green Tree" Faru>. Here Mrs Pattie was installed at last in a dwelling "all her own." and though it consisted of only two rooms, "it was like Heaven." she said. The farm Mr Pattie had secured was mostly overgrown with flax, manuka, and Wild Irishman, and many years ol hard labour ensued before this was fenced and cleared, and modern im. provements effected. Through all these eventful years Mrs Pattie stood by her husband, and helped him in his daily toil, and it may well be said of her in the "words of the poet:— "She left the vine. wreathed cottage and the mansion on the hill. The houses and the busy streets, where life is never still. The pleasures of the city, and the friends she cherished best — For love she faced the wilderness — this woman of the West. Mrs Pattie had three children — nnc of whom (Charles) died in April. 1807. The otter son. Mr Wm. Pattie. resid.-s at Riwaka and the daughter (Eu. phemia) is' Mrs Fry of Brooklyn. Her husband died on July sth. 1890. There ara nine grandchildren and twelve ereat.crandchildren 5 BIWAKA.
