TWO PERSONS MISSING.
A BRIGHTWATER RESIDENT AND A NELSON BOY. A FRUITLESS SEARCH. MUCH ANXIETY FELT. Great anxiety is felt concerning the safety of Mr G. W. W. Lightband, of Brightwater. and Harry Douglas Jack, son, aged lb, a son of Mr Ralph 11. Jackson, of 'Nelson, who left Nolson for tho' Rabbit Isiaud on Tuesday morning, in tending to spend a week on tho Island. The journey to ihe Island was being made in a Canadian eanoo, about 12 or 14 feet in length,he same craft that met with a mis. hap in the harbour in Oetober, 1906. as a result of which the lad Jack Moynihan lost his life. The fear that all was not well witb Mr Lightband and young Jackson arose through the discovery by Mr C. Bird senr., who lives at Tahuna, of the bodJ of a dog that had accompanied lho pair washed up on the Sands. Yester. day morning Mr R. B. Jaokson and others searched tho shore, but found no trace of the canoe or its occupant-v In the afternoon Mr Jackson, Con. stables Fitzsimmons and Cameron, and others went out to Apploby and madp a further search, but without success. Constable Cameron was instructed tn proceed to thc Rabbit Island, bu* he telephoned last night that he had been unable to get to thc Island owing to a high flood in tne river. He is, however. to.day searching Dell's Island and Best's Island. At an early hour this morning Con. stable Mahoney, of the Port, wiUi Messrs JRcid and Winstanley, loft in an oil launch to search the Rabbit Island. Another party was to set out this afternoon to make a thorough search along the beach at Tahuna and be yond the Rabbit Island. There has been a choppy sea in tho Bay for some days past, and seafaring men are of the opinion that the frail craft capsized, probably on the bar, which at times is very dangerous for small boats. At timo of writing no further com. munication had beeu recoived from the search parties. The greatest sympathy will be felt with tho rela. tives of the missing ones, and it will be the heartfelt wish of all that good news may arrive during the afternoon.
