CHICAGO CATTLE TRADE.
The value of the cattle received in Chicago during last year is estimated at £34,666,000, an increase of nearly £2,000,000 over 1906, and shows an average value of £11 a head, while the calves arc valued at £900,000— a little over £2 a head. The value of the cattle received was the largest on record, but the number was less than in previous years, although more calves were re- 1 ct'ived. For the first ten months prices, were higher, but dropped 4s 2d to 6s Id j a lOO'. li late in October. Most of the cat-tle-fold in Chicago go to other parts of tha I'nitod States, and at the end of t lie year nearly half those received were consigned to cities in the Eastern States, lt i.- said that the export trade to the L..nil<in market was the nio.st disastrous on record, alhoueh it opened well. The export of canned beef still shows a fall-iiiK-olf, only about 11,000 tons being exported, of "which 6000 tons went to the United Kingdom. It is reported that Chicago packers are having much return, i. as they are able to sell canned meat at home. at a price which pays for the carriage both ways and leaves a good profit.
