FAR-REACHING EFFECTS.
HAZE AND SULPHUR FUMES AT WANGANUI. WANGANUI, Wednesday. The effects of the Ngaruohoe eruption have been felt at Wanganui, 60 milos away from the mountain. A thick haze is hanging over the town, and tho air is distinctly charged with sulphur, while the country to the North is completely hidden from view. The "Herald" correspondent at Rangataua,. on the main Trunk line between Ohaknno £>nd Hanoi, wires: "The falling of volcanic dust continues, and it has become heavier. Ngarnhoe is smoking furiously. Waimarino residents had an exciting time ion Monday night, the rumbling being very pronounced. There are no earth tremors, and apparently no need for alarm, as Ngaruhoe is evidently acting as a safety valve. The country is enveloped in smoke." A message from Raetihi states that that place is unaffected by the eruption. Later. The "Herald" correspondent at Waiouru telegraphs: "Ngaruhoe was ! n violent eruption yesterday, throwng ashes and rocks a considerable height, the stones rolling in numbers 'lown hill. It is not quite so severe to-day. The Tokaanui coach got through yesterday."
