The elections for the Licensing Com. mittee resulted, after one of the keenest contests on record, in the defeat of the candidates pledge*] to maximum reduction of licenses, which would have entaiied i the closing of 14 hotels. The Citizens' League (moderate) ticket was returned, the successful candidates being Messrs Bagnall, Holland, Mennie, Somers, and Dr King. CHRISTCHUUCH, Tuesday. The no-license candidates were elected for the Avon Licensing Committee. The moderate party's candidates were i returned for the Riccarton Licensing Committee.
