The elections for the Licensing Com. mittee resulted, after one of the keenest contests on record, in the defeat of the candidates pledge*] to maximum reduction of licenses, which would have entaiied i the closing of 14 hotels. The Citizens' League (moderate) ticket was returned, the successful candidates being Messrs Bagnall, Holland, Mennie, Somers, and Dr King. CHRISTCHUUCH, Tuesday. The no-license candidates were elected for the Avon Licensing Committee. The moderate party's candidates were i returned for the Riccarton Licensing Committee. The moderate party won the elections for the Lyttelton Licensing Committee. I > DUNEDIX, Tuesday. Considerable interest was taken* in ■' the licensing election to-day, each side benif; represented by five candidates. The result saw the no-license party's ticket returned by a fairly substantial iiyijority. jfo Dunedin South a nolicense committee was also elected. It is understood that -both committees will refuse bottle licenses. , FEILDIXG, Wednesday. i At the licensing electons yesterday the "Trade" ticket were returned. The successful candidates were Messrs Bailey, Bruce, Goodbeliere, Mcßeth, and Woolven. The No-license party had a ticket, the adherents of which were defeated. j GREYMOUTH, Tuesday. The licensing election caused very little interest here, and the following were elected :— Messrs Kilgour, James, Bignall, Flynn, and Irvine. There were i eight candidates. j HOKITIKA, Tuesday. | There were 12 candidates nominated j tor the Licensing Committee.
