FIRE AT PALMERSTON SOUTH.
CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE DONE. [United Pbess Associati6n.] DUNEDIN, Sunday. A serious fiie occnriod at Palmerston | ahout 1 o'clock this morning, when five ! ! business places were destroyed. The I .-hops occupied by J. H. Appleby, fancy , goods and photographer, and 'E. L. j Burt, baiter and confectioner, were, 1 with their contents, completely destroyed. The former shop was owned by Lawson's estate, and the latter by Jas. j Arkle, of Dunedin. Crispe, solicitor's J offico, owned by Lawson's estate; Dalgety's store, an"d the Government Stock Inspector's office were u).-.o destroyed, bnt tho contents were saved. The* fire started in Appleby's shop, but there -. is no cluo as to the origin. The water | wan furred off at the reservoir, and i .in liour elapsed before it was available. Most of the members of the Fire Bri- | jnido were aup \ at .Auckland. Nothing is yet available as to the insurances.
