The polling in connection with the ' election nf a Lionising Committee will i tako p.lace to-morrow.' V.-v the Nelson Committee there are VI candidates— a moderate ticket of five and a temperance ticket of four, and three who are running independent!}-. The temperance and independent candidates are in favour of 10 o'clock cliiAing, but so far the moderate ticket has made no pro- I nouncement as to its policy. Seventeen polling booths have been arranged for in the electorate, and these will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tho following extract from "The Alcoholic Liquors Sale Control Act Amendment Act, 1905," which appears in the Labour Laws of New Zealand, will be of interest to shopkeepers :- -"Every day on uhkh the election of the L'-ceir-mg Committee takes place or upon which 'he poll for 'ocal option is taken, shall be, and bj deemed to be, a public holiday after midday, and such half-lioUfty shall be deemed lo be a holiday within, the meaning of the several statutes for the time being in force rtl.r.i'.'g '.c public holidays; and, further, between the hours of 12 not n and 7 o'clock in the evening it shall be unlawful to sell intoxicating iiquors m any iic:n*el pre:nr-es." (The franchise is the Parliamentary roll, and all electors have the right to vote.) The temperance candidates (Messrs Pettit, McLaren, Thomas, and Watson), addressed an open-air meeting in the city on Saturday night. There was a big crowd round the speakers, and the proceedings were very orderly. An invitation was extended to candidates not on the temperance ticket to speak, and the invitation v.a« accepted by Mr H. Atmore.
