CELEBRATION AT TIAIARU. [United Phess Association.] .'IMARU, Thursday. . To-day is the 50th anniversary of the arrival . at Timaru of the ship Strathallan, the first. immigrant 6hip to arrive in South. Canterbury, and opportunity has been taken of the occasion to celebrate the progress of the district during ita first half -century. The morning Sjroke dull, but the • weather cleared, nnd there is every prospect of favourable *. conditions. , ; The programme- forthe day comprises: a monster. ; procession,' followed by 'a luncheon; to 300 early settlers and visitors from all parts of ' Canterbury.' The Premier and- Lady Ward,- and' Miss Eileen^Ward :came to Tiraaru last evening to . participate In (he festivities. H.M.S. 'JPioneer . also arrived last evening. This afternoon will be spent in Caroline "Bay, and the day will be brought to a close with a fireworks display by the shipping in the harbour.
