'' " ' AUCKLAND, Thursday. - lii view 1 of the disastrous eaTthquakes in Italy, more than ordinary interest attaches to a report brought by 'the steamer Lord Sef ton; which arrived from San Francisco last night, that the volcano on Savaii Island, Samoa, ■was observed in violent eruption on January 3rd, emitting flame and steam about a/thousand feet. The sky for miles around was a canopy of fire. At Apia on the following day it was reported that several sharp earthquakes had been experienced a few days previcroslyiaria recently; but no damage bad'been sustained.
