An alarm cf fire was raised at 1 p.m. to-day, and gave the newly-formed Brigade an opportunity of testing the efficacy of tho fire-fighting appliances just established in tho port. The results were most satisfactory. Within five minutes of tho discovery - and ringing of the firebell the Brigado had turned out in full forco, and had a strong jet of water playing on the fire, which was raging in an old storeroom at the back of Stallard's boarding house, within a few feet of the origin of the disastrous fire of 1904. The outbreak, which was caused by children setting firo to straw in some old caßes, was overcome in a few minutes. It seems apparent that a recurrenitf^pf the disaster which overtook the town four years ago is rendered practically imposible by the establishment of the Brigade Tho pressure of water w.as most effective, and tho damago dono was trifling.
