THE SECOND DAY.
Once more the Nelson A. and P..-,'! Association has to be congratulated on ' I its good fortune in getting through the ! annual show in fine weather. On the first day, though rain threatened, it • held off, and yesterday, ' the popular j day, the weather was all that could be , ! desired. There was a clear sky-' during , . most- of the- day, and a sea- breeze • blowing acrpss Bdohinond . Park - was ; ' [ delightfully cool. With such a day , it; . ■ was only to be expected that "there ( would be a large gathering at 'the Park. ; : ' It will be a day. or^two-foefdre" Jthe s S!sfci' : cial, figures of ; . the atten?lan,ce;;a!!Sv.a^KT: : able, ,. biijUihere;- 1 appeared- to ;W«o«f .' j'peoplß''pw'sent . than . usual. There jiwas r 'not so much «>ngestion "Von. .jthenJwwii • I I the crowd this year •spreadingvoye'tfthe^i ! show ground..- '". ..:■£ '^1 ; "The judging of the light hbrses^cpm- | ' menced at an early hour,: and' waSSnot completed till the evening. There vwepe- • : good entries in this section, and "some ., . of the competitions were very keen, i The driving and harnessing events were, < followed with interest, and -when the'; jumping came on in the afternoon" i there was a rash for good positions. | The judging is ' always of v a high order , I of merit, and this year was no eceep- ; . tion to the wile. Indeed, the -judges. , land visitors from other provinces ' were I greatly, surprised at what, they saw, es- ."' I pecially. in the event in which lady! • riders piloted horses over the "sticks." j : Miss- Anderson's riding of "Mack",;wias j a revelation, the judges declaring '.wisty! they had never seen anything like" it. j ■ i Roderick ,Dhu -was a competitor thii., ! year, nncKwitfi Fred Krahagen up won | : ; "the jumping eiranfc for which, be was ] entered. The^e was only one four-in--.' I hand — Mr Gay's — but it was a very) creditable turn-out.' The hack classes i furnished plentyi of competition, the I, entries being large. ,The judges of the| horses (Messrs W. R. " Gawn and John ] Inraie, both of Mosgiel), were very. : pleased with the light horses as >a j whole. Many of the animalfc shown : would,' they considered, hold .{their- own!" in any pnrt of the Dominion.' ' |! The wood-chopping and sawing com- : ; petitions were not so keenly contested " as in former years. ■ ■ - j . Throughout the- day the domestic^; produce shed was crowded. This' is,; always a popular .-resort, the gentler..sex taking a great interest in the disr.j | play that is made in the building, v |; i It was noticed that there were, a..' I great many visitors from other pai'ts.l | All tho country districtej and Motueka, >: ! Biwaka, and Takaka ! and sister pro- 1 , | vinces were represented: ■_ >[ Ths various stands attracted consid-j erable attention, and. the attendants, were kept busy answering the inquiries, of patrons. . s' • . V" !. ■ ■ This year there were more travelling showmen on the ground than, in any.. previous year, and good business ap--, j peared. to be done. . « " . \ ' A parade of pnze' animals was held^. in the afternoon, and'waji far and away: the best thing of the kind yet' seen on.the ground. The vehicles—expresses, butchers' and bakers' .. carts, etc.,rwero a. feature of the procession. Great credit is due to Mr 0. H. Ghing, who organised the parade. . , .. A protest was lodged, in the milkmg competitjon,. ofi,.the ground that; the seconcl-~pnze cow -b"ad"*not been; mwlce* by the same person in the evening and morning. The protest was 'dismissed, as thore was nothing in the- rules to indicate that the cow had to be milked by one person only. In the Circumstances the money, accompanying the protest was returned, and it is understood, that conditions will be drawn up for future competitions that will meet the case. ' ■ ' It may be mentioned that the two pens of fat sheep "shown by M»' J. AV. Marsd*n and so higbly spoken of by the sheep judges, have been.purchaßeaby Messrs Trask and Sons. *". j - The Garrison Band played selections throughout the day. The Band has never given a batter performance tton that of yesterday, and following someof the' selections there was warm apr plause from the crowd.. Tho various officials . worked hard to make the show a success, and they aro to be congratulated " on the results achieved. 'The thanks "of our representative are due to the President (Mr J: K'Bartlett) and secretary (Mr Glen) and others who 'gaVe information req "Mi"'T. Pettit's pony ,"Hl"ari,J' which last year was disqualified as.ibeing over 14. 2, '.this year won' two firsts and, a i third prize. It will be remeniberedrtliat there was a good deal of discussion about the matter 12 months ago,; Mr Pettit contending that his .pony was not over height. This year's , Tesults show that Mr- Pettit was wrongly dis"qnalified last yearl '■ . -. In the domestic produce section J. Jelly man was awarded a second prizefor farmers' cured bacon (smoked).
