When the shipping companies agreed to send steamers with home cargo to discharge at Timaru (says the Lyttelton "Times") an arrangement waa made that the freight- charges should be the same as those for the main ports,' with the exception of that on cement. For some reason this was 6d a cask more than the rate for the main ports. Some time ago representations were made to the shipping companies, and they finally consented to reduce the freight by 3d a cask, but quite recently the extra 3d has resulted in about 4000 casks of cement from Auckland being used in Timaru instead of the imported article, the contract prices having been cut so fine that it was more advantageous to follow this course. The South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce intends to approach the shipping companies once more with a view to having the freight reduced. Wo oan assure our rcaden that in the furniture trade Mr Lock, the Universal Provider, of Bridge-etreet, has long since reached that point, and, despite of all efforts of the Opposition, he still holds the top-notch in the opinion of the baying public. He tells us that "no selling-off prices". ..or. "great reductions" can ever be made under Lock's system of business ; but a comparieon of the quality, ' workmanship, and value of his goods will at once show that the "regular prices" at Lock's are much be. low the "sale prices" of other firms.
