' - ; ~- — •- Mr Atmore was received with cheers and much applause/, and iwenV on to deal with the Second Ballot, which ie described as a great absurdity. Among 1 other things he. said that the tune-ber tween two baUots for the; Nelson electorate was not nearly lob£ «n<mgh. It had been 1 aavertised- in! the- evening papSr that electors should show sympathy with the late member, and vote for hint to-moirow. He 1 thought this, was a very strange way to do things. In other places young n»n had been returned; „ Supethumatf; worts;, naa been made to prevent . hM getting^; to. Parliament. His opponent was. afrai^ to meet him on the platform. .He was rtuite satisfied he. would, have been elected if there.^'as no second ballot, for if there had only befen^ one-baUofe the third candidate prbbably Wou^d not have stood. Rumours jhad been en* culated- by his opponent io damage Hid candidature. He had alwaVs endeavoured to better the lot off tho^. wording man. Mr Atmore went on to the various political Questions that haV* been dealt with, by him ;at his former meetings. He was quite convinced, that his actions on the Council 'were, in the interests of the ratepayers'. As secretary of the Inland Communicajbion League_he had done a great, dealv to push on the movement to bpih;Vp i>ef back country.' His chances in the. country rhad bean prejudiced by. rumours that. had -[been
