Those aldermen who were late ir arriving at the last meeting of tho Redfern (Sydney) Council were burning with curiosity which they had to suppress until the questions-without-notice period arrived, regarding the fate of the mayoral and town clerk robes, says the "Daily Telegraph." Both the Mayor and the town clerk looked much more comfortable, and did not seem to miss the ornamental garments. When the opportunity arrived for satisfying the curious ones, an alderman said he would like to know where the robes were. The Mayor told him that they had "been asked for a loan of them by a country shire, and they wero very glad to comply. He did not enlighten the aldermen why they were. pleased to oblige. The same alderman said that he had been afraid they were entrusted to a relative for safe keeping. "Oh, no!" said the Mayor; "wo have not got down that far yet. Wo still have a little money left." The robes of office were introduced in the Eodfern Council some time ago, but they have never "caught on." Boys used to assemble regularly to "admire" the Mayor and the Town Clerk, who have felt uncomfortably Sgjf-conscious, till they havo found a means of getting rid of the incubus.
