LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS.

It is notified that the Arthur Estate tea and luncheon rooms, Wakefield, are now open. A Gospel address will be given in the Oddfellows 1 Hall, Wakefield, this evening, at 7.30. Nomination,, for the spring meeting of the Marlborough Racing Club, to be held on Thursday and Friday, 19th and 20th prox., close at the secretary's office, Blenheim, on Saturday next, 31st inst., at 9 p.m. There will be company inspection parade in connection with the Stoke Rifles, at Nelson, to-morrow night. Town members are requested to fall in at the Railway Station at 7.50 sharp. Every member is requested to attend this para do. The Port Sowers' Band sale to be held in the Port Mission Hall this evening promises to bo a great success, the attractions being a work stall and sweet stall, and also a well-filled bran-pie for the children. Given a fine night the building should bo crowded with eager purchasers, and those who intend to buy should make a point of being there early. Admission is froo, and the doors open at 7.30. The anniversary services in connection with the Presbyterian Sundayschool will be held next Sunday, the preachers for the day being the Revs. C. H. Garland and J. H. MacKenzie. Special anniversary music will be rendered by a large choir, and the collections will be in aid of the school funds. All those associating in the musical portion of the services are reminded of the practice to be held this evening at 7 sharp. Mr W. Mnrray, manager of the Freezing Works, states that the fishermen in the Bay this morning sighted four large whales in close proximity to land, near the .Voutero Bluffs. The whales were within a hundred yards of the boats, and a good view of them was obtained. Several "blows" were made, and the whales did not trouble the boats in any way and did not appear to be frightened. Several frolics were indulged in, and the whales seemed to be enjoying themselves. The presence of whales is an unusual occurrence for Nelson. The annual combined sale of work, etc., in connection with the Cathedral and All Saints' Sowers' Bands will be held in the Bishop's School on Saturday next from 2.30 to 6 p.m., and from 7 to 9 p.m. Various attractive stalls have beon arranged, including work and fancy goods, doll 6, produco, etc. Musical items and dialogues will be given by the children.
