NELSON EDUCATION BOARD.
, YESTEBDAY'S PROCEEDINGS. THE DECALOGUE. The following business was transacted at the meeting of the: Nelson Education Board yesterday afternoon : — Mr Beuke gave notice to move that the November meeting of the Board • be held at Motueka. Mr W. Houlker, junr., A.B.LP.H., applied for the position of architect . to the Board. — Besolved that Mr Hoiilker be informed that the position was" filled prior to receipt of his letter; but that his application would be filed for future reference. The Board resolved to support the nomination of Mr C. M. Whittington, of D3nnevirke. as a member of the Committee of Advice of the Training College. Miss Martin, Westport School, was granted a month's leave of absence owing to ill-health. The Black's Point Committee asked that a holiday be granted on County Council election day in November, and .-. objected to the headmaster being appointed returning, .officer for the Murray Hiding. — Mr . -Shepherd said that the Committee did not object to the keadmaster .being returning officer — it . was an old trouble revived. The headmaster referred to applied for a holiday on election day, being returning officer, and for the use of the schoolroom as a polling booth. — The holiday was granted, and the uso of the schoolroom for polling purposes granted. Appointment* were made as follows: — Fairdown, sole teacher, . Miss Barton; Millerton, assistant, Miss Doyle; Denniston, headmaster. A. Douglas; "Westport, pupil teacher, Miss McKay; East Takaka, sole teacher, Miss Walton; Wiakarewa, assistant, Miss Alexander. ' Miss 8. Fletcher's resignation of the pupil teachprship at Burnett's Face was accepted. A discussion ensued on the reading or. a circular from Mr A. H. Vile, a member of the Wellington Education Board, in reference to copies of the Decalogue being hung in the schools. It was stated that a. number of Boards desired the Decalogue to bo exhibited. ■ It was mo?ed. by Mr Franklyn that the Board had no objection to the Do-, calogue being hung in the schoolrooms. Mr Fair was opposed to the proposal, as the teachers were of various denominations, and would have to expounJ to the children. It woukl lead to sectarianism. Mr Shepherd could not see how any harm oould be done— why shr.tid they b* ashamed of what they professed 7 Mr Franklyn eaid the teachers would have no say— they were not supposed to mako any "comments. lie domed th.l 3 the proposal would leail to sectarianism. The Chairman said the proposal coulil not possibly <lo any harm to the children—it wa* not introducing seotariaujfini into the schools. ' Mr Munson said the Decalogue was a portion of the Scriptures, and he objected to them being hung in lbs schools. On a, vote being taken, Messrs Shepherd, Frahklyn, Smith, and the Chair man supported, and Messrs Fair an » M-unson opposed. . — - - ■■' ■«
