NELSON EDUCATION BOARD.
.MONTHLY MEETING. YESTERDAYS PROCEEDINGS. The monthly jneeting of the Nelson Education Board was commenced yesterday. Present : Me.ssrs A. T. Maginnity (Chairman), J. \V. Fair, J. B. Shephard, J. Munson, W. X. Franklyn, J. D. Beuke, F. W. Smith, and T. Baigent. The Chairman brought up the question of a qu..>ry made by the Audit Department in regard to the expenditure of moneys on the Nelson Girls' School. The Department pointed out that the Board's building fund was not intended to provide for the erection of new school buildings. It is held by the Board that the school in question has been re-built on another site. A resolution to this elfect was carried. It was resolved to make application to th? Department for a grant for the purchase of land at Stoke for agricultural purposes. A special committee reported that arrangements had been made for painting the teacher's residence, at Motueka, and for sundry repairs to be made at a cost of £19 18s. Received. Mr Shepherd reported on the inquiry into the partial destruction by fire of teacher's residence at Westport. It was lvsolved that inquiries be made from Mr Neve as to why a fire was being used in the residence and left unattended, which the Board understood was the cause of the outbreak. The Board was advised that Mr Neve was not using the premises for residential purposes at the time. The Secretary reported on the inquiry into the destruction of the Matiri school by fire and the arrangements made for the school work to be carried on. The report was adopted. It was resolved that Mr D. O'Rourke rental of 30s a year. It was resolved that household schools be established at Maitai Valley and Mangarakau 04 the usual conditions. It was resolved that one-third of the Committee allowance be granted to the building fund as from Ist January 1907. "*' The Board's architect (Mr A. R. Grif fin) reported on the condition of Motupiko School. It was resolved ,in view of the age of the building, that the Board is not disposed to incur a large expenditure. A sum of £15 was granted in order to make the building habitable. Mr Griffin also reported on the condition of the Sherry Valley School building (in connection with the Board's application for a grant for a new building at Wangapeka). It was resolved that the report be forwarded to the Department, Applications were dealt with as follows : — lmprovements, teacher's (residence at Stoke : Committee to invite tenders. Proposed- chool at Tahuna : Chairman and Inspector to report al next meeting. Baize curtain, etc., Spring Grove: £7, granted. Fencing Nelson Girls' School-. Architect ia structed to call for tenders. Enlargement- school at Brooklyn : Referred tc Department. Pump und well, Lowei Moutere : £5 granted. Sink, Appleby £3 granted. Improvements, residence Happy Valley: £4 5s granted. Gravel ling, Whakarewa : Referred to Mi Haycock. Improvements at residence and school, Upper Moutere : £12 grant ed and tenders to be called for painting. Application for fencing, Sprint brove : Estimate required. Subsidy oe money raised towards piano, Rjwaka Resolved that the Board has no funds tor the purpose. Residents of Ngalimoti petitioi^d tc have school shifted to site near Blacli Bridge. Resolved that the request cannot be acceded to
