The Mareeba, which is ashore near Newcastle, has been driven by the gale hard inshore, and heavy seaß are pouring over her. The sea drove in the portholes and made a hole in the deck. The signals of distress were unobserved, and the second officer and the cook landed and made their way inland to receive assistance. The crew reached Newcastle last night, several in a state of collapse through their trying experiences. They were unable get anything to eat all day. AJI the boats on the port side were smashed, but the crew managed to launch the starboard lifeboat, and several men got away with it. It eopsized in the surf, but the men reached tho shore safely. A life-line was then got ashore, and the crew were landed. The captain remained aboard till the lifesaving brigade arrived in the afteraoon. The cargo of the vessel is valuable including 1000 tons of raw sugar. [Earlier detail of the wreck will bt found on the 4th page of this issue.]
