THE REVENUE.

The revenue for the. past year has been the largest we have ever had. The net increase, notwithstanding the concessions that hay« been made, has been no lees than £656,000. The prosperity of the Dominion has been really . abnormal. I do not want to see the ■ expenditure increased more than is ne. cessary, and I hope the Government will not unnecessarily increase it. 1 want to ask them to exercise all due caution with reference to the increase of the expenditure, and to remember • that although we are now enjoying a I season of the greatest prosperity, there ■is always the danger of a check, and that while the revenue may diminish prompt^, the Expenditure cannot be brought under control and reduced in the same way as quickly; therefore, they must be as careful as they pocsibly can.
