NELSON CITY COUNCIL.
FOKTJJIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of tho Nelson City Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr J. Piper), Crs. Lightband, Field, Bisley, Turner, McConchie, Hampson, Pettit. Cr. Grace was granted leave of absence. FINANCE Payments were authorised as follows:—

COBBESPONDENCE. Mr O. W. Hanby wrote making a complaint with rega-d to the samtuiy service. — Referred to Works Committee. Mr T. Mulliu3 s-ought the C >nae*l 's authority to number the business places and private h. rses in tho city. It was staled that, there wou^d be- i.<* expense to the Council, tho householders paying tha cost. — Referred to the City Engineer, with power to act. Mr W. Gaynor again approached the Council in reference to a cab driver's license, pointing out that between 30 and 40 residents had signed a petition to the effect that he was capable. The writer asked why ho should be singled out when two other cabmen were suffering from the same physical defect is himself 9 — Refer- c J to the Works Committee. The uso of Trafalgar Park was granted to the Citizens' Band for a concert on Sunday next. Messrs Fell and Atkinson, on >)•-•- . half of Mr A. Atkinson, asked the Council to approve of a right-of-way in Beachville. — Referred to WorksCommittee. Mr W. E. Brown applied to be supplied with the proper grade of 1 Quebec Road. — Referred to Works Committee. Mr V. A. Biddle offered the Council a section of land with a frontago of 75 feet to Washington Road, and a depth of 282 feet, in exchange for £75 worth of earth for filling-in purposes. — Referred to """ark 5 " Committee. Nine property owners drew attention to the fact that storm water that should go down Grove-street was carried over private property. — Eeferred to the City Engineer for a report. A communication was received from Dr Mason, Chief Healtx Officer, requesting the Council v give effect to Inspector Dorizac's recommendations in respect of premises in Trafalgarstreet within, say, 30 days. In their present condition the premises referred to were considered scarcely fit for human occupation. — Resolved ;hat notice be given as requested. Mr H. Hall, Secretary to the Nelion. Rugby Union, requested that, in view cf the football match against the British team, that the fences at Trafalgar Park be repaired. — Referred to the City Engineer, with power to act. Mr . L. Adams asked permission to take a few loads of earth from the unformed portion of Kawai-street. — Referred to Works Committee. j Mr T. F. Martin, Secretary to tho j Municipal Association of New 3ea- | land, forwarded a copy of the remits 30 far received for the Conference to bo held next month. The Premier inquired if the Council would be prepared to supply a flag or r. banner to be*- displayed in Auckland during the week the American fleet was there. The banner would bear the words, "Welcome from Nelson " — Referred to the Finance and Works Committees. Finance Committee's Repobt. The Finance Committee reported as follows:— 1. On letter from Mr E. H. King.— Consideration deferred, the Councillors to be invited to inspect the land offered. 2. On letter from Mr J. Anstice. — Consideration deferred till next meeting. 3. On letter from Mr F. Greenslade. — That Mr -Greenslade be informed that if the Council find that the Abattoir is not affected by the Freezing Works, some improvement in the di- ' rection indicated will be- made. 4. On letters from Messrs Adams and Harlev and A. G. D. Willcocks, and as to Wages of men at Abattoir.—Considera- (
tion deferred till the next meeting of the Committee. 5. On letter from Mr ' W. Stewart.— That this application be , granted on tho usual conditions. j Works Committee's Report. The Works Committee reported :— l. > On letter from Mr F. H. Richmond.'— ' That the City Engineer be authorised to fill up the holes in Mary Ann-street. 2. On letter from Mr F. J. Sparks.— That * they have no recommendation to make. 3. On letter from Mr F. J. Rose.—Thatth». City Engineer attend to the matter. 4. On letter from Mrs M. Cross. — That this matter remain in abeyance, subj ject to the inspection of the City Engineer. S. On letter from Mr A. Ho- ] garth.— That Dr Hudson and Mr J. Bain be notified to fence their land, aiid that the attention of the Inspector of Noxious Weeds be called to the noxious weeds. — That Mr Hogarth be allowed _ the right of pasturage on the Britannia Heights Reserve from year to year for three years, provided he fenced the reserve. 6. As to reserve, Nile-st. East. — Consideration deferred till the next meeting of this Committee. other Repobts. The Sanitary Inspector reported that
two eases of enteric fever and one case of diphtheria had occurred since tho las.fc meeting. The manager of the Abattoir reported that for the fortnight the number of animals slaughtered was as follows: — Cattle 78, sheep .527, lambs 234, calves 10, pigs 55;' total 901. Two sheep had been condemned, and the carcases sent to the manure works. The remainder of the business is reported under separate' headings. . — i ' *
