Personally, Captain Eng land refuses to be drawn on th© subject but it is known that a quarrol botweor, Lieutenant Shackleton and himself originated through the former's desire tc get into the ice, and that his attempt to override the captain's judgment led to a conflict of authority, which even the kindly intentions of Professor David and others failed to heal. It. is stated that when Captain England refused to give orders for the .ship to proceed through a particularly hazardous part of the journey, Lieutenant Shackleton sr. tually countermanded his orders, anc firmly requested the chief engineer to steam ahead. Then, it is said, a»> eiettable scene tcok place, and till th ■ departure of tho Nimrod on her ret urn trip tho relations between the iaptnin and the'lievrtenant were even colder than indicated by the ship's thermometer. Captain England's resignation will not lie handed in until various matters of detail have been arranged, and it if ouito likely that the command will be given to the present chief officer, Mr Davifs. As matters at present sti.nd. in connection with the expediron, thev iro decidedly mixed, for lieutenant Shackleton, "who appears to have arranged the venture without the assistance of ■:ny organised body, is practically master of the situation, and he, of course, ij not available.
