NELSON EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board was commenced yesterday. Present: Messrs Maginnity (Chairman), Shepherd, Munson, Baigent, Franklyn, Lock, Beuk'e, and Smith. Tenders for painting Riwaka School were held over until to-day. Two tenders of £10 each were received for tools and wood shed at Kiwi. The Committee were authorised to a» cept one of them. A tender of £5 (from A. Walker) for repairs to house and fence at Ca'pleston was accepted. " The Waimangaroa Committee were authorised to accept A; - West's tender (£ls ss), for painting' iiftenbr' of school, Mr C. Friend^to supecyisSi .; - 'rHp'te'adWflwr^e'c^iw^jfbr painting Foxhlll School" and for -^fecting picket fence at Tapaweral l> /' The sub-committee appointed to report on the question fof Sherry and "Wangapeka schools made the following recommendations : To meet- .the present pressing requirements and to provide for the 17 children attending the household school at Mr Corrigah's homestead, we recommend (a) that the- School be raised to the status of an' aided school; (b) that the Board contribute a' sum not exceeding £75.' towards .-the erection of a building suitable for present requirements; (c) that the building be erected upon the land of Mr Wattie or the land of Mr McPherson and near the latter's Southern boundary, both of which' sites have frontages to the main road, and both of which gentlemen signified their readiness to place two acres of land at the disposal of the Board free of cost. The committee could not recommend any alteration in view of the probable increased settlement in the southern part of the Sherry district which may affect the Sherry school, or render it desirable to remove it to a position further south. The report was adopted and copiea were ordered to be~seat to the petitioners. The Chairman reported that a special inquiry into the management of the Technical School at Nelson • had not been completed. The time for presentation of the report was extended for a month. The Treasure's statmeht revealed a credit balance on all accounts of £1493 17s 3d. The debit balance on general account was shown at £508 2s Bd, and the amount available on. the buildlae funa .was £953. _ Ttn» building fund showed a total credit of £1972 4s sd. Resolved that the whole of the correspondence, in connection with the Westport Technical - School beTeferred to Messrs Munson and Bailie to consult with Mr Colvin, M.P. '. The Lower Wakefield Committee reported adversely to fhe suggestion of the Department that Pigeon Valley be made a side school to Wakefield. Resolved that a copy of the committee's report bo forwarded to tho Department. Messrs Bisley Bros and Co. forwarded account sales for sale of cottage nest gaol site, which realised £21 lis net. A communication was received from the Stoke School Committee reporting on the room offered for side school at Tahuna. — Left to Secretary to arrange for certain improvements. Resolved also that the Board advertise for a teacher. The Town Committee forwarded letter from the headmaster of the Girls' School re proposed Honors Board. Members expressed sympathy with the object, and it was resolved to ascertain the probable cost with a view to rendering some financial assistance. The architect of the new Girls'' School was instructed to furnish specifications for concrete, wall and other work in connection with fencing the ground. Applications, were dealt with as follows: Uruwhen.ua, Takaka West, school bell, declined; Motupipi, force pump and well, granted ; Birchfield, gravelling, referred to Westport memhers; Hampden-street conveniences, etc., referred to architect for report ; Nelson and Lower Wakefield, special allowances, annual cleaning of schools, declined ; Burnett's Face, new house and repairs fo school buildings, referred to Westport members for ' report ; Glenroy, painting, etc., tenders to be calle<Tfor and submitted ; Westport, purchas of hose (declined), repairs £4, granted.
