TO-DAY'S PROCEEDINGS.

The monthly meeting of the Education Board was continued this morninK. Present— Messrs A. T. Magin-iitv {Chairman), Bailie, Lock, Sheplierd, Baigent, Franklyn, Beuke, Smith. Mr Fair was granted leave of absence. The examination reports were read by Inspector Harkness on all schools in Suburban North, Waimea, Collingwood and nemhbourhood, Sarau, Neudorf, Nelson Boys' and Miss Hooper's private school. The schools described as satisfactory to good were — Redwood's Valley, Ferntown, Waimea West, 88 Valley. Aniseed Valley, Hope, Appleby Clifton Terrace, Miss Hooper's. Those described as good were — Wairoa Gorge, Spring Grove, Foxhill, Boys' Central. Correspondence was read from other Boards strongly supporting the Nelson Board's proposal to endeavour to secure an alteration in Regulation s—examination5 — examination and classification of teachers — so as to secure for teachers fuller recognition of service in schools of grade. A petition was received asking for the establishment of a school at the township of Hector, Ngakawau, and it was resolved to consult with tho Granity Committee. ln reference to a request for a school on the Buller road, it was resolved to make further inquiries. It was resolved to refer to the Chief Inspector a request for a household school at Maranau, the Inspector to have power to act. Mr W. A. Kumbold was appointed Commissioner at lYLillertou.

The following appointments were made : — Miss newlett, sole teacher, Redwood's Valley; Mrs F. B. Christie, sok- teacher, nillside : Miss E. Horn, sole teacher, Pokornro ; Merton Gibbs, sole teacher, iUaruia Junction ; Miss M. 2. Radford, sole teacher, Sergeant's Hill ; Mr A. G. Gray, sole teacher, Capleston ; Mr T. Symes, sole teacher, Upper Takaka ; Miss M. Robb, Whangarae; Miss A. T. Slowey, M.A., secondary assistant, Reefton.

It was resolved to hold over the appointment of a pupil teacher at Brightwater, and to again forward ivnss M. Hill's appointmnt to the Committee accompanied by a doctor's certificate.

It was resolved to open the Rocky L.iyer school as an aided school, with Miss Alexander as teacher.

The Lower Wakefield School Committee wrote oojecting to the school nours being lengthened beyond five a day. (This was in response to a suggestion that the Committees in districts atfected by hop-picking, fruit industry, etc., should have school days up to 54 hours). ' *

The Upper Wakefield Committee wiote opposing the suggestion that the Sixth Standard pupils be examined at Wakefield. The Chief Inspector said that in view of the objection .the Inspector offered to examine the children at their own school, but they preferred to go to Wakefield. The Board, hewever, expressed an opinion that it was better to convey pupils to a centra] school for examination.

Accounts amounting to £3529 9s 6d were passed for payment. The Timaru School Cammfttee wrote in reference to the method of cleaning schools adopted there. Sawilrs* damped with a solution of sheep din' was spread across the floor at one end of the room, and it was sweat to t faother end and gathered up all'the durt thus preventing it rising and settling on the walls. Since adopting this me" thod there had been no epide-r-'cs amongst the school children. The Health Department and the Education Department approved of the method.

The Board resolved to forward a copy to all committees with a rcccinmendation for its adoption.

Mr McKenzie, M.H.R., informed the Board that he was endeavouring to get a vote for a technical school on this year's estimates. Letter to be acknowledged with thanks.

A letter was received fr^m Tinner Dovedale complaining of larrikinism on Sunday afternoons, resulting in damage to school property. The writer was referred to the police.

Miss Brusewitz's resignation of the tuachership at Drummond's school at Motueka Valley was accepted.
