Two thousand Chinese employed id tlic Simmer Jack mine petitioned the Government to allow them, to renew their contracts. PIETERMAKITZBUEG, Friday. The Natal Government complains that while the Transvaal's war contribution, amounting to £30,000,000, has been Waived, Natal's £700,000 is not reduced, and £520,000 for rents and harbour dues is not paid. THE FORCE OF PUBLIC OPINION. WITHDRAWAL OF THE NATIVE BEER BILL. (Received July 27 10.37 a.m.) PRETORIA, Friday. The Government have withdrawn tho Beer Bill, which was intended to legalise the supply of beer to natives in the mines. AUSTRALIAN TRADE PROSPECTS, (Received July 27, 10.17 a.m.) SYDNEY, Friday. Mr Valder, the New South Wales commercial agent in South Africa, has returned. He says that from a commercial point of view trade is shockingly bad there _ But despite the general diminution in trade Australian products have been able to hold their own.
