TOWN SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.

iUO.vnilA liEETIXG. The monthly meeting of the Nelson Town Schools Committee was held last evening. Present : Rev. J. H. MacKenzie (Chairman), Rev. J. P. Kempthorne, Messrs Franklyn, Boyes, Webley, Apologies were received £rom Alessrs Snodgrass and Savage. The Education Board notified that a tender had been accepted for a new Girls' School on the old Gaol site. — The Chairman informed the Committee that the contractors for the school h;;d made a start. The Secretary to the Board informed the Committee that its proportion of the special Government grant for last year worked out at £21 5s 2d. The letter stated that 56 schools in the district received under £1 out of the special grant. In reply to Mr Franklyn it was stated that country schools received 9d a head and the town schools 6d a head. On the Rev. J. P. Kempthorne's motion it was resolved to communicate with other Boards and inquire as to tho proportions in which the special grant was distributed. The Board Waving declined to pay an account for printing ballot papers for the election of the Committee, it was resolved on Mr Franklyn's motion to inform the Board that in fnture the Committee would apply to the Board for ballot papers in the terms of the Act. The Board notified that Mr Jacobs' tender had been accepted for painting at Haven Road School.— lt was reported that the work had been satisfactorily carried out. The report from the Boys' Central School showed 515 names on the roll ; average attendance 471.5 ; percentage, 91.3. That from the Girls' Central School showed 619 names on the roll; average attendance, 532; percentage, 86.1. Resolved that gravel be obtained from liuffam's Quarry for school grounds. Resolved to draw the attention of the head teachers to the manner in which the slow combustion stoves in the various schools were being used, and to indicate the proper method. Resolved to send notices to parents whose children were not attending school regularly, and to prosecute in one instance. Tho Chairman remarked on the frequent absence of teachers during the past two or three months, and a discussion ensued. It was resolved that the Chairman consult with the headteachers on the matter. Six applications for a pupil teachership were forwarded by the Board, and these having been considered, it was resolved that the names of Miss Constance Palmer and Miss Janet Johnson be recommended to the Board in the order named ; and that in the event of Miss Palmer being appointed, her appointment date from June Ist. shp having for a time filled a vacancy in a town school. .Accounts .imttimting tn £19 5s 3d were passed fur payment, and the Committee rose.
