On Friday evening, the 7th UlSt., a SOo.al was held at which the | children attending the Wai-.HJ State school and their parents were the I guests of the School Committee and school was packed to the doors, a' very enjoyable programme was gone through coasting of selecuons by the Walfefield Brass Band, M ,K. Watson's phonograph, sqngs by Miss C. Tunnicliffe, Mrs Watson, Messrs G. Cole Len Hoult, S. Field, G. Johnson, and A. E. Batt; duet, Messrs W. and G .Cole; recitation, Mr h. Field, and exInibitiou of dummy boxing manipulated IbyMr G. Johnson. Afterwards a | plentiful supply of refreshments was hinded round, with fruit and lollies extra for the children. Mr E. S. Hoult, as member of the School Committee presided, and at 4hja conclusion thanked all who had assisted in making the -amering such a success. '.The tvakefield Band was especially mentioned as being always willing to enntributs items at any social gatrnering. The evening was brought to a close oy the band playing "Auld Lango Syne." On Friday last there was again a good attendance. Mr Louis Hoult occtmied the chair. The programme for the evening consisted of a picture gallery, essays written in theroom. The picture -chosen was rather a difficult ono to identify. The essays are to be judged by Mr Edridge, the result to be made" known at Friday next's meeting. It should be mentioned that the society is giving a first and recond prize. This makes the contest more interesting. The item on the syllabus for this week is a debate on Technical education. Mr Len. Hoult takes the affirmative, and Mr Smith the negative. * i
