DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT MATAURA.
[United Press Association.] GORE, Saturday. A fire occurred at Mataura this morning, which destroyed a building at the corner of Denbigh and Bridgestreets, belonging to Mr John Lowden. The building was occupied by H. J. Greenwood, newsvendor (corner shop) ; A. J. Lowden, cycle works ; J. Lowden, wheelwright; the Southland Drapery Company, drapers; and Moses Lowden. Nothing was saved. Mr Moses Lowden had a narrow escape Luckily the weather was calm, or the damage would have been greater, as there wece no means of preventing the spread. The insurances are : J. Lowdon, £100 in the Royal, on the smaller buildings, insurances on the main building not asoertainable ; A. J Lowden, £100 in the New Zealand, £10 in the Royal, stock and fitings; J. Lowden £30 on stock in the wheelwright shop, £10 on tools in the New Zealand ; H. J. Greenwood, £100 on stock in the Victoria; Southland Drapery Company, £150 on stock in the Liverpool and London and Globe. ■
