THE ABATTOIR.
GRIEVANCES OF THE BUTCHERS.
Amongst the letters received at last night's meeting of the City Council was one from Mr E. E. Trask, stating that he had received a communication from Mr Barnes, Government Veterinarian, stating that all meat killed at the Abattoir must be allowed to hang 12 hours before removal. Tne writer protested against the action, as it fas most unreasonable. He also vsssked that the Abattoir Committee be called together to go into the working of the Abattoir, as it appeared as if the Abattoir was no6 for the butcher, but for the employee. The Mayor said the butchers desired to meet the Council, as they had several matters to bring forward. Cr Bisley said the Abattoir Committee was seeking certain information and it would be better to defer meeting the butchers until that information was received. | Cr Hampson said the matter referred to by Mr Trask was beyond the Council's jurisdiction. He favoured ■waiting until the information sought was received before meeting the butchers. Cr Field said the instructions as to 12 hours did not come from the Health Department, but from the Agricultural Department. The instruction was for the winter months only, and that being so it could not be of such great importance. The Mayor thought the regulation would be hard in a. shipping town ; but the butchers would have to fight out the matter with the Government. Cr. Hampson moved that the Town Clerk ascertain how far the Council was bound bv the instructions of the Agricultural Department, and that the butchers be informed that the Council would confer with the b'utchers at an early date ; and that the butchers meet the Abattoir Committee on Thursday evening. Cr Snodgrass seconded, and sui?<ves,te thnfc Mr Barnes be invited to bo pre»ent to give information. The motion was carried.
