The "Stead Medal" which is to be presented to Staff-Sergt.-Major Redmond has beeen received, but nothing has yet been decided as to when the presentation will be made. Lieut-Colonel Harkness, Captain C. H. J. Brown (Denniston Rifles', and Captain J. Brown (Millerton Rifles) will form the Court. Mr Hogarth wa.s ' a successful exhibitor of ferns in Scot--1 land, having taken many valuable prizes ; ind it is his intention to again devote some of his time to his old hobby. Mr H. Kirkwood, who has been a -add at the Nelson Magistrate's Court ■ for some years, is being transferred to Auckland " on promotion, and will ; leave by this evening's steamer for his new sphere of duties. Our Wake *ield and Wai-iti correspon- - dent writes : — The Wai-iti Literary and Debating Soc -it.v held the second weekly meeting c:i Friday evening last, Mr F,. S. Hoult i.i the chair, and about 40 members present. The secretary read a letter from the Motupiko Literary Society inviting the Wai-iti Society to nominate a candidate to take part in a mock county election early In July. Consideration was deferred for a week. The subject on the syllabus was impromptu speeches. Quite a number of speakers look ihe floor, and some of the subjects introduced caused considerable discussion, for instance, "That the Legislative Council should be abolished." The general opinion was that the Council should not be abolished, but tint there should be some better method for its constitution. On the subject, "The Nclson-Tadmor railway time-table," all agreed that the nresent time-table left very little to be desired, except that th,- 4.45 train from Nelson mi^ht be altered to leave earlier in the winter months, as at present it ■ntails a lather wearisome wait at Wakefield. Several oth->r subjects were discussed and nil present appeared much interested in the proceedings. Our Wakefield correspondent writes: — The entries for the events in connection with the Wakefield Farmers' Union Field Day on Prince of Wales Birthday close to-day. The secretary, Mr James Bruce, has already received a number of entries for each event ,so that keen competition may be looked for, and of course this means a good day's sport, The secretary has also received from Mr Edwards, district railway manager, a rough draft of the proposed timetable for the day, which should give , satisfaction to all intending visitors to Wakefield. Trains .will . arrive at Wakefield both from Tadmor and Nelson shortly after 9 a.m., starting from Tadmor at 8 a.m. and Nelson 7.45 a.m. This will give those who wish to use the trains ample time to reach the grounds before the . first event starts. There are also other trains timed to arrive at and depart from Wakefield at convenient intervals throughout the day. Full particulars will no doubt be advertised at an earlv date. The Field Committee -re pratcfnl to the railway management fcr the mrniniT in which their wishes have been met in this matter. Mfssrs Bisley Bros, and Co. will hold their usual weekly auction sale at Richmond on Wednesday next. On Friday, 31st May, at 11 a.m. sharp, they will hold clearing sale of freehold property, stock, etc, implements, furniture, etc., on the premises, Richmond, on account of the trustees in the estate of the late Mr W. Sutton. On Wednesday next Messrs Mark Sprot and Co., under ins(.ruc|.ions from Mr J. R. Macdonald, will hold a sale of furniture and effects, particulars of which will appear later. On Saturday next, at noon, at their rooms, Hardystreet, freehold property with 4-room-ed cottage, thereon, on account of Mr W. F. Cresswell.
